So What Exactly is a quilt?A quilt is a type of textile made by layering fabrics together and stitching them as one piece. It's not a blanket which is a large peice of fabric created in one piece with wool, fleece or other synthetic fabric. It's not a comforter or duvet which are often filled with down or other feathers or synthetic high loft batting and loosely held together with stitiching.

A quilt is constructed from layers and stitched together, often with intentional design. It has a top or pieced layers which is sometimes referred to as a "flimsy". and more often than not made of 100% cotton (for best results). The batting - or middle part is unpatterned, and may look like fluffy or slightly flat fleece. It can be made of cotton/polyester blend, 100% cotton, bamboo, wool and other blends. The backing may be pieced in several large pieces or one may be one large piece all made of the same fabric.

In recent history quilts were often made from small pieces of fabric from worn clothes. Frugal women would make a worn shirt or dress go farther by stitching many pieces together to form a quilt top. Often they would separate lights from darks and make designs out of the pieces that they had - cutting some into triangles and some into squares. All of it was done by hand and it took months or years t make a quilt top. This was the beginning of quilting as we know it.
Today quilting is more of a hobby and sometimes even therapy. It is an art form that is regaining popularity and is a great creative outlet.
